"Bus" in Urdu means Enough
“Bus” in Urdu means Enough
Growing up, I got to hear my parents speak in Urdu to friends and family. Although their usage of Urdu has waned over the years, something I’ll never forget is their use of the word bus.
Bus in Urdu means enough. What’s most interesting is the context in which they use it.
Usually, it’s the response to “how are things going?” In the same way that Americans would say “not bad” or “I’m fine, thanks.”
To respond to “how are you doing” with “enough” is a profound declaration.
It’s to say I’m okay, because I have enough.
Or perhaps, enough questions, no need to further inquire, I’m doing great.
Though it makes me wonder… if saying enough is a common/accepted response, what happens when you feel you don’t have enough?
