funk is about what you leave out
This is in reference to musicians like Herbie Hancock. Brian Eno tells the story about how he watched Hancock play and how he would play a melody, then remove some of the notes, and then remove some more, until only a chiseled, perfect melody remained.
a good melody comes out immediately.
This makes me think of John Cage as well as Michaelangelo - both artists who made sense of emptiness, and stillness.
