We habitualize to protect ourselves in turbulent times

For instance, when things are rough in my life and a lot of stuff is going on, I let the clothes pile up near the hamper. If I get into habits of not putting clothes in the hamper, it would take cognitive effort to get into a different habit, and I think my brain has a new habit threshold that gets lower in times of intense chop.

It is strategically using the basal ganglia in the brain to your advantage, to be less stressed.
